Tiny upstairs place run by a charming couple; he studied 4 years in Italy and speaks Italian. One menu per day, reservation essential. Fantastically fresh, creative dishes, Italian with a Japanese touch. Reasonable prices, especially at lunchtime. Counter seats offer view of the maestro at work.

We came here on a rainy day in search of some awesome food... and we found it!
They fit us into their small dining space and treated us (the only foreigners) so kindly. Exactly what we needed after being in the rain.
Mandatory one drink per customer but that wasn't an issue because they had two kinds of interesting Italian craft beers. One was described as "bitter" and the other as "sweet". I chose the bitter and it tasted somewhere in between an IPA's floral note and a saison's citrus flavor. Highly recommend trying if you like beer!
The food was a bit of a wait but we didn't mind because the pace was still very manageable. They do pastas that aren't listed on the menu such as cacio e pepe. We ordered carbonara, prosciutto, (beer battered?) fried chicken, beef reticulum (tripe?), and the cacio e pepe.
Order lots because the portions are a bit small but everything turned out so amazing it was hard to forget. You won't find a bad plate here!

Exceptional innovative Italian cuisine with a Japanese twist! We went to this restaurant for lunch (5 courses) and were impressed by the creativity of the chef, the freshness of ingredients and the wonderful flavors:
- first course: white asparagus with cream of potato (rather delicate and light)
- second course: antipasti that included finely chopped raw squid with fennel; slices of prosciutto; mozzarella, etc.
- third course: winter pumpkin risotto with firefly squid and micro-thyme
- fourth course: cabbage roll filled with little chunks of beef that had been cooked in the oven for a long time and was so tender (I can’t describe how amazing this dish was)
- fifth course: dessert of strawberries with rose milk ice cream and meringue wafers.
Note: it’s spring so the firefly squid, white asparagus and strawberries are in season. Germoglio changes the menu frequently to serve what happens to be in season. The courses are not huge so one feels comfortably satiated at the end of lunch.
The chef cooked in Italy, specifically Alba (Piemonte) and Milan, for many years. I have placed Germoglio in my list of top 5 restaurants here in Kyoto.
We also had a glass of Nebbiolo for lunch. All in all, one of the best meals I’ve ever had in Kyoto, at a very reasonable price.
