Jaken Nou - Hiroshima Style Okonomiyaki Review Summary

Delicious okonomiyaki, freshly made by the chef right in front of you. Not too fishy. Good balance between the sauce and pancakes. Osaka style is better than Hiroshima style in my opinion.

ordered 2 hiroshima style okonomiyaki and added cheese n mentaiko each. Total cost for both was 2700 yen which was really worth it and filling. you can watch the staff cook the okonomiyaki in front of you and it was satisfying to watch. i liked that the food was kept warm on the hot plate while we ate giving the soba a crisp bottom and there was free flow mayo n okonomiyaki sauce. It’s really a hidden gem that many locals visit among the busy tourist streets and i would return if i passed by again and was craving okonomiyaki. However smoking is allowed.

AUTHENTIC JAPANESE RESTAURANT...
We were lucky to find this. It's on the 9th floor and we got to sit in the front of the hot plates. Not the most comfortable seat, but it gave us an opportunity to interact with staff, practice our Japanese and watch how they made all the meals.
Incredibly busy, the staff took time to answer any questions we had and Google translate was our best friend.
We had okonimiyaki with beer and a fabulous white wine.
When you go, make sure you have some sort of translate app as everything is in Japanese.
They were very accommodating as I requested my egg be baked on top of my okonimiyaki and asked for smaller noodles. They happily obliged.
Good food, great staff (if you're prepared to get their attention and interact) and great atmosphere.

Food was ok but nothing to shout about. Not sure about the other reviews on the bad service, but we enjoyed good hospitality, and everyone was friendly enough - although there was a slight language-barrier. I would recommend this place to try out, as it offers a good typical Japanese dining experience (Eg. Cosy, smoky, upstairs etc).

Exceptional food, exceptional service, all for a very reasonable price! And if you sit at the bench they make the food right in front of you!
