Kyoboshi
Kyoboshi Description
Kyoboshi is a top tempura restaurant in Kyoto that epitomizes culinary artistry. This prestigious establishment, under the masterful guidance of Chef Toshinori Sakakibara, has been a testament to the unwavering commitment to age-old recipes and techniques handed down through generations.
Nestled in the historic heart of Gion, Kyoboshi's heritage dates back to 1947, located serenely off the pathways of Hanami-koji. Its name, a fusion of 'Kyoto' with 'star', honors the culinary legacies of Sakakibara's ancestors. A leisurely stroll through this iconic neighborhood might even grace one with the fleeting sight of a maiko, her ornate kimono symbolizing the timeless allure of the area.
Entering Kyoboshi, one is met with interiors defined by their understated elegance, mirroring the establishment's culinary ethos. The heartwarming hospitality of Chef Sakakibara and his wife ensures that each dining experience transforms into an intimate gastronomic event.
Here, tempura transcends its dish status, evolving into a culinary symphony. Every delicacy, carefully placed on an exquisite lacquer tray, is complemented by curated condiments and a tenshi paper. Eschewing the commonplace, Kyoboshi's tempura emphasizes Kyoto's signature flavors, accentuated by salt, a touch of lemon, or the zing of grated daikon radish.
Despite the diverse and indulgent spread, Kyoboshi's tempura is remarkably light and refreshing, a feat achieved through the harmonious blend of select oils, batter, and seasonings. Each flavorful morsel, drenched in tradition, ensures Kyoboshi carves a special place in every diner's heart.

Their tempura is very unique in that you hardly feel any oil on it. Each piece has a very thin, light, crispy coating and is soft and juicy inside. It is presented beautifully and is incredibly delicious.
They apply different cuts and frying methods to different vegetables and seafoods to pull the best flavor and texture out of each of them. For instance, carrot is cut in the shape of a spring (so that it could be cooked evenly, I guess) and it was so soft and sweet that we couldn't recognize it was carrot. Amazing.
The chef and staff are genuinely hospitable people. The whole experience was so pleasant it felt like heaven. Would definitely recommend.

Looking forward to visiting again next time in a different season.
