Kyoto Star Bar

A quiet and classy bar, surprisingly not full of tourists in the area. I walked in without a reservation on a weeknight and shared the bar with only one other party. It’s a skillful one man show. The bartender’s movements were precise and the service was excellent. Though the recipes aren’t complicated (stick to the classics), they are incredibly well-executed. Note also the super clear ice—a testament to their attention to detail. I was skeptical ordering just a gin and tonic (how good could it be?) but the addition of a couple extra ingredients really balanced out the drink. Also, strongly consider getting the mixed nuts, which are smoked. (However, the chocolate was not worth it.) It was an absolute delight spending time at this bar.

The bartender gave fantastic whisky recommendations and prepared delightful cocktails with the fullest attention to detail. Very friendly service as well. Highly recommend. There is a cover charge per seat but it is worth it. Try the cherry blossom cocktail, or one of their cocktails with hand carved ice.

A taste of Tokyo in Kyoto. For those unaware, Star Bar is originally in Tokyo's Ginza. Star Bar Ginza is where Bar High Five's Hidetsugu Ueno started bartending.

When I went, the bartender there was Takamasa-san. He spoke good English and made customized excellent drinks. If you're unsure of what to order, they have an English menu that has a list of classic drinks.
