I ate here on my own. It was a chilly Tuesday night in Kyoto in early spring and I was the only guest in the place. I am pretty sure they opened up just for me and I was their only customer that night.
And it was a meal to remember. Spectacular. Nishioka-san was friendly and charming, explaining his food and why different courses were put together as they were. The food was just wonderful - light, fresh, absolutely delicious, well thought out - every dish just excellent.
A must visit.

Tenjaku is a kaiseiki (which Kyoto is famous for) with focus on tempura. So it's like you're getting a combined experience of tempura omakase and kaiseiki rolled into one.
Owner Chef Nishioka inherited both the restaurant and the recipe/knowhow from his grandfather. Love this type of story. Nishioka speaks English well enough to helpfully explain different ingredients and dishes.
This helps make the experience more relaxed and not overly stuffy. The ingredients are very fresh, a hallmark of good food.
