After watching Lucas Sin's Nat Geo piece on Udatsu Sushi, my wife and I dined there in late March 2024.

The restaurant is on a quiet residential street 35 minutes by taxi from our hotel. Seven diners, including us, were seated at magnificent cypress counter in a very unique room with smooth concrete walls and beautiful art.

For the next two hours Udatsu-san creates sushi that's at a level far removed from what we're accustomed to. It's not a place to take photos of the food, although I received Udatsu's permission to snap pix of two memorable pieces: pink and red urchin atop a deep-fried seaweed cracker and a piece features three cuts of tuna. There's no soy sauce or wasabi at our seats although we watch one of the assistants grate a fresh wasabi root using a piece of sharkskin. No green-dyed horseradish here!

The variety and quality are indescribable; I stop counting at 14 courses, my wife stopped eating at around the 16 mark. I hang in until the end!

As a footnote: neither one of us had much of a taste for sushi for the balance of our three weeks in Japan!

Now to the food. Very fresh ingredients and well put together tasting course. The highlights for me was the Hokkaido Sea Urchin, Charcoal seared Otoro, Mackeral Pie & Abalone Soup amongst many others.
All the dishes were explained in English by Chef Udatsu.

So that you don't get lost. Catch the JR Line to Shibuya station, transfer to the Tokyu Line to Naka Meguro. Then it's a 5 minute walk. There's a concrete house on a corner with no signage.
