Shinka

The most phenomenal fusion lobster / Italian izakaya I've ever had. We ordered the lobster pasta and Japanese amberjack (稲田) carpaccio and the flavour profile was at once complex, unique and original. I highly recommend asking the chef for their recommendation and giving them a budget. Expect to spend around 5-7000 yen per person. It's well worth it.

In summary; we left disappointed, disrespected, and hungry.

The service was bad. I am a Japanese citizens who speaks japanese but I am half white, and came with a foreigner white friend; is that the reason why? We order a lobster dish, a yoghurt and grapefruit salad, 2 otsumami, and 2 miso soup. We never saw the color of those miso soups. Water was served in child-sized glass and they never refilled it. So naturally, we ask for more water, but it never came. The food portions were crazily small, so we decide to ring to order more food. 15 minutes later and nobody comes to our table (and the restaurant was almost empty)…. So we decided to go to the register, pay and leave, hungry and thirsty.

The food was so bland that it made us question if we had covid. The first little customary otsumami which is a edamame cake that they charge 550¥ literally tasted like…. nothing. The otsumami we took (yuzu potato salad and quail eggs pickles) were ok, not the best not the worst. The lobster was so small (like 5-6 bites), we did not like the taste of it (we left like 2 bites out of the 6), it’s crazy for the price. And the salad was ok but tasted so bland. Perhaps the bad service made the food taste worse, but honestly, we would have rather eaten anywhere else but here.

Total bill was almost ¥6000 which is pretty expensive for a izakaya, with our stomach still empty and a humiliating feeling that we were voluntarily ignored and disrespected due to the fact that we don’t look like the perfect japanese people. One star for the ambiance because the restaurant looks nice.

Japan’s native lobster species, the Ise-ebi, is most abundant in the cold season. The best are said to come from the Shima peninsula in Mie prefecture. This spiny, bright red crustacean is often associated with New Year’s, since its long antennae are seen as signs of longevity.

Nakameguro’s Shinka offers a modern Japanese interpretation of a traditional lobster meal, with a seasonal menu in which the prized Ise-ebi is incorporated into every dish. Look forward to the likes of sesame tofu infused with lobster dashi and the signature Shinka plate, a surf ’n turf number pairing wagyu with perfectly grilled lobster.
