As "standing bars" go in the area, this is one of the better ones, especially as it is located less than a minute from the ticket gates of JR Tamachi station . The cash-on-delivery system is interesting (and relatively rare) and the place is usually full of office workers enjoying some light food and alcohol. If you aren't familiar with the system, at each table is a small basket, and you and your friends can put in as much cash as you want. As your items arrive the staff will take the correct money and provide you change in the basket (while explaining in Japanese how much they are taking.) Top it up as you go, or when the basket is empty, head home! Also rather fun is the decor inside. Plenty of early 20th century posters mix with upturned beer cases used as impromptu tables, adding to the feeling of being a place for the hard working Tokyoite to relax.
Speaking of atmosphere, this isn't the place to go if you want a "quiet" drink. Orders are shouted across the room to the kitchen/ bar, and when it gets busy, the staff need to raise their voices! The food is mainly snacks such as fried egg, deep fried pork cutlet, onigiri (rice balls), tsukune (minced chicken, cooked and served on a stick) and yakitori. You can order the latter "by the skewer" or an assorted set of 5 ("omakase"), left to the discretion of the kitchen (your choice of salted or with a "tare" dipping sauce.) If you do choose the "omakase", be prepared for an assortment that may include liver, cartilage, fried chicken skin, heart etc. All of it was delicious by the way...
